Proper name [Norwegian Bokmål]

IPA: /¹ˈteː.tʏs/, [ˈtèː.tʏ̌s]
Rhymes: -eːtʏs Etymology: Internationalism, borrowed from Latin Tethys, from Ancient Greek Τηθύς (Tēthús), the name of a Titaness associated with water in Greek mythology. The deeper origin of the Ancient Greek name is uncertain. It has been connected with τήθη (tḗthē, “grandmother”), possibly reflecting Tethys's ancient role as an ancestral mother of the gods; an alternative proposal connects it with *kʷeth₂- (“to bubble, foam”). The moon of Saturn was discovered by Giovanni Cassini in 1684 and was named after the mythological Tethys by John Herschel in 1847. The prehistoric ocean was likewise named after the Titaness; the Austrian geologist Eduard Suess introduced the name Tethys for it in 1893. Compare the parallel adaptations Danish Tethys, Swedish Tethys, Finnish Tethys, French Téthys, Spanish Tetis and English Tethys. "etymology_text": "Internationalism, borrowed from Latin Tethys, from Ancient Greek Τηθύς (Tēthús), the name of a Titaness associated with water in Greek mythology. The deeper origin of the Ancient Greek name is uncertain. It has been connected with τήθη (tḗthē, “grandmother”), possibly reflecting Tethys's ancient role as an ancestral mother of the gods; an alternative proposal connects it with *kʷeth₂- (“to bubble, foam”).\nThe moon of Saturn was discovered by Giovanni Cassini in 1684 and was named after the mythological Tethys by John Herschel in 1847. The prehistoric ocean was likewise named after the Titaness; the Austrian geologist Eduard Suess introduced the name Tethys for it in 1893.\nCompare the parallel adaptations Danish Tethys, Swedish Tethys, Finnish Tethys, French Téthys, Spanish Tetis and English Tethys.",
